Yuriko Kobayashi is the Japanese national record holder in the women's 1500 m. She set the national record while in high school after breaking the national high school record five previous times. She was the national champion at 1500 m in 2005 and at 5000 m in 2008. After graduating from high school she joined Toyota Jidoshokki, but soon ran into legal conflicts with Rikuren, the Japanese athletic federation, after she subsequently enrolled in university. She spent much of 2007 with unclear status before being barred from competing in professional events with Toyota Jidoshokki. Kobayashi ran the 5000 m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics after failing to qualify for the 1500 m.
